Nordic Fun in Southwest Colorado

snowshoeing in deep snowNordic skiing is a great way to enjoy the early season snow and there are so many places to go enjoy the day. The best part is, most Nordic Centers are FREE… That’s right, how can you beat that? You get great scenery, good times, great exercise and family fun, all for just the right price – nothing but the gas to get there. So, what’s available?

nordic cross country skiingOne place to go is Wolf Creek. Open to the public, the ski area has received over 7 feet of snow just since December 6th, a week ago. With almost 10 kilometers of groomed trails, there’s a lot of area to cover. The first 4K loop is around a natural meadow area. The other 6K goes down to Alberta Reservoir through the trees and back again. Because this is offered at no charge, there are no patrols on duty and you must clean up after your dogs. To access the trails, take the ski road at the end of the lower parking lot to Alberta Park.

Molas pass in the San Juan Mountains is a great area to enjoy Nordic activities. The views are excellent because it’s part of the San Juan Skyway and the Million Dollar Highway which are scenic drive areas. Andrews Lake is about 1 mile south of the Molas Pass on US 550 and about 7 miles south of Silverton. Go for great fishing in the summer, and excellent snow in the winter.

Colorado backcountry skiers and Nordic enthusiasts need to know about the importance of being prepared in the Colorado mountains. The best way to keep yourself and your companions safe is to understand the danger of high altitude, avoiding  hypothermia and know what to do in case of an avalanche.
