Massive snowstorm hits the front range

The biggest October snow storm to hit Colorado in twelve years is leaving roads packed with snow and ice and is falling faster than crews can clear it. That’s true for Colorado home owners who also can’t keep up with the snowfall. On the eastern plains, strong winds and blizzard conditions are causing zero visability and highway closures. At Denver International Airport, there are flight delays and cancellations and all roadways leading to DIA are on accident alert.

Masnow_removal_crewny areas in the southern and western parts of the metro area have more than two-feet of snow on the ground and while major roadways are drivable, side streets are a lot more challenging. Road crews were ready and prepared to meet the challenge, but there are still only so many crews to get to all areas of the city.  The good news according to the school children is that school is closed and will be for a few days. That means that there are extra hands for both snow removal and winter cleanup. All that new fallen snow will be put to good use if the kids have their say!

Climatologists at Colorado State University in Fort Collins say these types of storms, packing this much snow, in October are rare, but they do happen.  In an average year, eastern Colorado including the Denver metro area expects to see about 56-inches of snow. So far, this year about 25-inches of recordable snow has already fallen.
