Winter Park Ski Area
T
he alpine ski resort of Winter Park has been in business since 1939. The resort was run by the City of Denver until 2002, when a partnership was formed with a Canadian corporation in Vancouver, British Columbia, and they took over the operation at that time. Over the decades, many Colorado residents enjoyed learning how to ski and snowboard in this extremely beautiful area. The city of Winter Park is located a short distance away and skiers could access the base area of the ski resort through the Moffatt Tunnel via the Ski Train which operated until the spring of 2009. The train runs from Union Station in Denver to the WP resort and back, and plans are in effect to reopen the Ski Train as early as winter 2009. The famous Mary Jane is one of three mountain peaks in the area and is known for the moguls, tree skiing and difficult terrain. In addition to being close by Denver, and extremely popular, Winter Park is very proud of the fact that they receive more annual snowfall than any other ski area in Colorado. December through March typically sees the most accumulation of snow, and spring skiing in the Colorado mountains is a favorite of many. From beginners to advanced and professionals, Winter Park is a wonderful place to enjoy alpine skiing!

The new Winter Park Resort Village is located at the base of the mountain and features pedestrian-only brick and cobblestone main streets that are home to shops, restaurants, studios and galleries. It is surrounded by mountain lodges, homes, condominiums and exceptional mountain views. A local motto is: “It’s a place where locals feel at home and where visitors feel like locals”. A trip to the Village gives you so much to choose from, and all the family fun you can handle. Your kids will enjoy finding their way through
a maze, tumbling and playing in the gyroscope ball, bouncing and flipping in the harness of the giant trampoline and playing miniature golf during the warmer months, just to name a few activities. If you are a mountain biker, in the spring and summer months you can take the bike up the mountain in the ski lift and ride the trails down. If you want to ride one of the longest alpine slides in North America, it’s there too. The Village is easily accessible both by driving in, or by riding down from the upper parking area at The Vintage Hotel, in the open air Cabriolet gondola.
“The freeride scene at Winter Park Resort continues to push the progressive envelope with five levels of terrain parks. Rail Yard, Winter Park’s advanced terrain park, continues on its quest to impress, recently taking home three Top 10 rankings in Transworld Magazine’s resort rankings for Best Park (tie for 4th), Best Overall Resort (8), and Best Pipe (10).
Last season’s addition of Dark Territory, Rail Yard’s limited access area, also continues to evolve with more unique features. Dog Patch, located on the east side of the Eskimo Express, offers skiers and riders an intermediate park system ideal for perfecting skills. Dog Patch East, Winter Park’s latest addition to the freeride family, is located just east of the original Dog Patch, and will offer a variety of non-traditional jib features for skiers and riders. Starter Park, located below Snoasis, is for the beginner jibber and features small rails perfect for those first attempts at rail sliding.”
There is a lot of fun waiting for you in Winter Park, and the beauty of the Colorado mountains can’t be beat! The Winter Park ski season is a wonderful time to bring the family and enjoy all this resort has to offer. There are so many activities to enjoy, from guided tours of the mountain on skis or snowshoe, or even in an Arctic Cat, to friendly competition with your friends in a Nastar race. In any season, for any reason – come visit the Village at Winter Park and you’ll be sure to come back!
