The Nature Center at San Sophia provides hands on environmental education opportunities In addition to all the fun on the slopes, the resort offers more than just the ski mountain. The San Sophia Nature Center’s Environmental Science programs have been developed to help children of all ages learn more about the natural surroundings of this beautiful area of Telluride. Different aspects of the environment are covered each week in a way that’s exciting and entertaining for the students. A hands on approach and field activities help children to retain the important information and make the most of their environmental education.

Assisting a special needs person to get the best Telluride Ski Resort experienceAnother program that Telluride is especially interested in is The Telluride Adaptive Sports Program. This is “a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of people with disabilities by providing educational and recreational opportunities that develop life skills, encourage personal growth, and promote independence. TASP offers adaptive skiing, rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, cycling clinics and a whole host of other activities that allow students to participate on an equal level with their family and friends in a safe, fun, outdoor environment. These challenging activities catalyze our students’ ability to become more active, productive members of their communities.”

Twilight drop Telluride - Falling with styleIf you enjoy the wild and untamed back-country experience, Telluride has some spectacular terrain for skiers and snowboarding in the Bear Creek Basin. A short hike from Ophir will take you to the rugged country which is prone to avalanche and has many chutes and faces which are extreme and include rock outcroppings and cliff bands. This is not for the faint of heart, and our caution to you is “Don’t go if you don’t know.” Please use the utmost caution and preparation before considering Bear Creek.

Voted #1 terrain parkWho has been voted the best terrain park at any Rocky Mountain ski resort according to visitors to OnTheSnow.com? In 2008, Telluride, Colo. took that honor. Over a million visitors had the opportunity to write reviews of all North American resorts and rank them in five categories. Telluride came out on top, and they had a lot of great things to say about the rest of the resort and town. For spectacular beauty, stunning mountain terrain and a firm commitment to environmental excellence, Telluride is the place to be.
