Aspen Mountain is part of the Rocky Mountains and one of the foothills of the Elk Mountains, located just south of the
town of Aspen. This ski area is one of four adjacent ski areas operated collectively as Aspen/Snowmass. The sister resorts are Buttermilk, Aspen Highlands and Snowmass. Even though the mountain is not particularly high, due to the closeness to the town of Aspen, it casts its shadow over the old mining town. Aspen started as a mining camp in 1879 during the Colorado Silver Boom. After the silver boom of the 1880′s and 90′s, and the active mining was over, it became the site of recreational downhill skiing. “In 1946, the newly-formed Aspen Skiing Company, founded by Walter Paepcke, built the first chairlift to the top of the mountain and opened the ski area that bears the name of the mountain.” The original chair lift opened on December 14, 1946, as the longest chairlift in the world at the time. This chairlift was eventually replaced in 1972 by two double chairlifts, Shadow Mountain and Ruthie’s. In 1986 things improved again with the installation of the Silver Queen Gondola, which can be accessed in downtown Aspen, making it possible to get to the top of the mountain from the center of town. In 1950 Aspen hosted the World Championships, the first world championships held outside of Europe, and the first since 1939. Aspen Mountain had been a skiers dream for decades, but it wasn’t until April 1, 2001 that the area officially opened to snowboarders. Since that time, many more visitors have enjoyed the runs.
