Sterling Colorado
Sterling Colorado is located in the Northeast region of Colorado. It is the largest city in this portion of Colorado and serves as the county seat for Logan County Colorado. Originally home to multiple Plains Indian tribes, the land eventually began to be transformed into large cattle ranches after the conclusion of the Indian wars in the area. From that point on, many traveling the Oregon Trail branched off and followed the Overland Trail down to the South Platte River hoping to find fertile land where they could plant their crops.
Settled by new farmers to the area, the original town of Sterling was located about 4 miles to the north of it’s present location. These early travelers along the Overland trail tried to establish their farms closer to what’s known today as Greeley Colorado, but finding that most of the good farmland had already been claimed, they backtracked along the South Platte River until they found land where they thought they could be productive.

By the late 1800’s, news a of new railroad line through the area got the attention of the Sterling residents. Knowing that the railroad passing through their town would bolster their economy greatly, town leader Minos King went to the Union Pacific Railroad leaders to propose a deal! King offered them 80 acres of land as a right-of-way for the railway if in turn, the Union Pacific would build a roundhouse on that property and allow retailers and other businesses to build up around the railway. A deal was struck and the land surrounding the railroad was surveyed and divided up into plots, thereby creating the new location of Sterling Colorado. To assure that the town would grow and flourish, Mr. King also donated land for a church, a cemetery, various municipal buildings and a school. The town of Sterling as we know it today had found it’s beginnings.
Today, as the County Seat in Logan County, Sterling Colorado is a bustling eastern Colorado plains town that offers a great lifestyle, with all the comforts of larger cities, while maintaining it’s farm country charm!
