Salida Colorado
Salida, Colorado is known as “The small town with the Big Heart”. It has been complimented by visitors and magazines as being a “sweetly unpretentious town”, and a “dream town”. That speaks highly of the area and the residents of Salida. The location is in the Upper Arkansas River Valley close to the Continental Divide, but in the lower “Banana Belt” region. The climate that is produced is milder and wonderful for year round outdoor recreation. The views are spectacular because in any direction you look, there are superb mountain ranges. The Sawatch to the Northwest, Sangre de Cristo to the south and the Mosquito range to the north. This is the land of the 14er’s. There are 12 peaks nearby that top 14,000 feet in elevation.

After the decline of the railroad operations, residents were mostly ranching or working at the Climax mine for the Climax Molybdenum Company. To the north of the town is the Arkansas
Valley and Buena Vista, Colorado. The Arkansas River runs through the Salida area and is home to one of the oldest whitewater races in North America – the annual FIBArk Kayak race. Tourism is a very important resource for the area.
