Olathe Colorado
Olathe Colorado is a small and hospitable community of agricultural families who produce the famous Olathe sweet corn people enjoy so much. Every year the community gets together for the “biggest little festival in the U.S.” the Olathe Sweet Corn Festival and enjoys music, entertainment, fun and food – featuring their prized corn. The town is situated between Delta and Montrose on the Uncompahgre River, and the word Olathe is a Shawnee Indian word which means “Beautiful”. The Ute Indian peoples were really the first area residents and they enjoyed the fertile valley and the cool rushing waters of the Uncompahgre River.

Olathe is surrounded by beautiful national forest in the San Juan Mountains, and amazing vistas of the Grand Mesa, the world’s largest flat top mountain. The Grand Mesa boasts over 200 trout filled lakes, an elevation reaching 10,000 ft. and some of the best hunting in Colorado. Day travelers will enjoy outdoor sports and activities all year round, including winter ice fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, skiing, and in summer, hiking, biking, fishing, camping, boating, and much more. Nature and wildlife photography is a year round adventure. Nearby south east of Olathe is the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, a wilderness canyon of extraordinary depth and rugged beauty. Twelve lookout points along the rim will help you appreciate the carved canyon, sheer walls, and impressive views of this geologic treasure.
The town of Olathe dates back to 1882 after the Ute Indians were relocated to Southern Colorado. The Rio Grande Railroad built their narrow-gauge railway through this area, and found a small settlement, a Post Office and the beginning of an agricultural community there. The town was forming and the name Olathe was chosen. From there it became a little hub for surrounding communities. The Montrose Regional Airport is only 10 miles away from Olathe and is an easy way to visit the area.
