Oak Creek Colorado
Oak Creek is located in Routt County and was originally a coal mining town. Incorporated in 1907, and home of the Oak Creek Mine, it’s still a small and quiet community. Daniel De Long was the developer of the Oak Creek Mine, and in a book called “The Lost Oak Creek Mine” by William Ford, the author is quoted as saying of De Long “His courage and fortitude allowed the Town of Oak Creek to become the hub of all coal mining interests in the area.” Oak Creek is not far from Steamboat Springs Colorado and includes some stores, restaurants and the quaint amenities typical of a small town.

In the early 1700′s, French trappers and traders made the valley their home, and soon the cattle ranchers and miners took up residence. When the stagecoach line came through the area, the name for the park was born. There is a wonderful assortment of wildlife that remains in this area and wildlife viewing is very popular. There are many trails to enjoy including the “Grand Traverse” of Stagecoach Reservoir, the Elk Run Trail, Overlook Trail and the Lakeview Trail. The Wetlands Trail is interesting and is a system of boardwalks which rise over the wetland created by the Yampa River.
