Nederland Colorado
Nederland is a Colorado mountain town 15 miles west of Boulder. It began as the site of the mill for silver ore from the rich silver mines at Caribou which was a boom town in the 1800′s and is now a ghost town five miles away. The town was named by a Dutch mining company that purchased several mines in the area. It is the Dutch word for “The Netherlands”, meaning low lands. Likely, this had reference to the lower elevation from the boom town of Caribou, and people would go down to Nederland for the supplies they needed. Today the town is known as a “Gateway to the Indian Peaks” and the new James Peak Wilderness Areas. The Eldora Ski area is just minutes away from Nederland.
