Montrose Colorado Attractions

If you are traveling to the Western Slope of Colorado and visit the Montrose area, there are many things you’ll want to know about. The entire area is filled with spectacular scenery and Scenic Byways to enjoy. Check out the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, which is to the east of town, and  the spectacular Curecanti National Recreation Area and the Blue Mesa Reservoir and Morrow Point Dam. To the south of Montrose is the beautiful San Juan Mountain range and Mesa Verde National Park. Visit the Ute Indian Museum or any of the History Museum attractions to learn more about the area.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

Black Canyon of the Gunnison Visitor Center - image by Colorado OutingThis National Park is a geologic wonder, and includes some of the deepest and most narrow canyons you’ll find in the USA. The landscape is rugged and rock formations jagged – so bring your camera to capture the beauty.  There are two entrances to the park and the North Rim and South Rim have different features. Make sure and visit the Black Canyon of the Gunnison Visitor Center to get more information about the area.

Morrow Point Reservoir and Dam

Looking down the cliff from West Elk Loop Byway Overlook to the green water of Morrow PointThis Colorado reservoir is truly unique because you’ll find it deep in the canyon that blends into the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The geology of the canyon really sets off the green waters of the reservoir. The Morrow Point Dam is the first double curvature dam built in the USA and is amazing from either the top view or the base. The Morrow Point Reservoir is so far down into the canyon, there are only a couple of ways to get to it. This is one area that must be seen to be fully appreciated!  Read more…..

Blue Mesa Reservoir

It’s stunning in both the size and beauty and has a hydroelectric plant near the dam. The Blue Mesa reservoir is located in Western Colorado, between Montrose and Gunnison. You can reach this area on the famous and beautiful West Elk Scenic Byway. Every year there are many different fishing tournaments in the area to enjoy and there is camping on the Reservoir too. Come see the Blue Mesa!

Ute Indian Museum

The Ute Museum sits in the heart of traditional Ute territory on lands once homesteaded by Chief Ouray and his wife Chipeta. View a unique online exhibition that looks at major events in the history of American Indians in Colorado over the past five centuries. The museum participates in a number of special events and free day opportunities during the year. Call for hours and prices.
