Larkspur Colorado

Larkspur is a rural community between Castle Rock and Colorado Springs = image by Colorado OutingThe Town of Larkspur is a very small community in Douglas County, Colorado. The population was 234 at the 2000 census, which has remained fairly constant since a census was taken beginning way back in 1890. The area is rural and quiet, yet not far from the I-25 Interstate and Castle Rock, and so is accessible quickly from surrounding cities and towns. The most popular and widely recognized event for the town is the yearly summer Colorado Renaissance Festival, held in the hills just west of the town.

Larkspur train tressel crosses over the old highway - image by Colorado OutingOriginally, the town of Larkspur had the name Huntsville and in 1862 a territory post office was placed there. In 1871 the name was changed by the Governor to Larkspur in recognition of the beautiful flowers that grow in the area, and it wasn’t until over 100 years later in 1979 that the town was actually incorporated. Although small, the town of Larkspur was adjacent to the growing railway line built for the Denver and Rio Grande Railway and by 1871 the train was running through this town. As the population grew, a one-room wooden schoolhouse was built south of town and area children began their school years there. By 1896, a new brick school was constructed and is still standing today.

Larkspur Town Hall is very small and tucked into the landscapeIn the “Roaring 20′s”, the town tried to become a health resort and the train would bring visitors to relax in the beauty and tranquility of the Colorado mountains. All the business which supported that effort and were located on Plum Creek, were destroyed in a large flood in 1965. Since then the population has remained modest and rural, and with the addition of the Renaissance Festival every summer – the area is very entertaining to visit.
