Whether you are a recreational fisherman or a serious angler, Hartsel is the perfect destination for fishing enthusiasts! Only 10 short minutes away, there are three state reservoirs that all offer excellent boat and shore fishing opportunities, and the South Platte River runs right through town with over 25 miles of public access for fly fishing. As with all of Colorado, one of the unique aspects of this beautiful area is the change of seasons. At an altitude of almost 9000 ft, the mild summer climate makes your day trips, fishing trips and other summer activities even more enjoyable. Or if you prefer the activities that come along with colder weather, the winter months in Hartsel offer wonderful snow and world class skiing and snowboarding at 6 major ski areas within forty minutes to two hours away.

The rolling hills and rugged mountains provide a perfect habitat for lots of different wildlife. If you love to watch animals you will enjoy seeing pronghorn antelope, deer, elk , and don’t forget to keep an eye out for buffalo . There is a large buffalo ranch on the northwest corner of the junction of State Highway 24 and Highway 9.
Hartsel was founded by Sam Hartsel in 1862. He found gold in the area and then turned to cattle ranching. The area was also a summer destination for the Ute Indians , who frequented the natural hot springs and hunted the large herds of deer , antelope and buffalo that roamed South Park . The town jail stands ready to receive all cattle rustlers – so beware!
