Mesa Verde National Park
Mesa Verde National Park has earned the distinction of becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside the park is the historic Mesa Verde Cliff Dwellings where the ancient Anasazi people lived. This distinctive American Indian civilization and culture existed from about 1200 BC to 1300 AD in the Four Corners area and the cliff dwellings today are a magnificent example of the cultural architecture. In 1906 President Theodore Roosevelt established Mesa Verde National Park to “preserve the works of man,” the first national park of its kind. Today, the continued preservation of both cultural and natural resources is the focus of the park’s research and resource management staff.
