Dumont Colorado
Dumont is a small unincorporated town situated along Clear Creek and is a part of the Downieville-Lawson-Dumont combined townships. As you drive along I-70 heading west to the high country, one of the small towns you will encounter is Dumont. It’s very close to Denver, and offers people many recreational opportunities in Clear Creek County. The local Downieville truck stop and Breeze Ski Rentals have been in place for many years, and are a familiar and welcome sight to many weekend travelers when the highway slows down and traffic gets congested.

Located between Idaho Springs and Georgetown and close to Empire, Downieville-Lawson-Dumont is the home of families who enjoy the historical and recreational area. A scenic drive along the Mt. Evans Byway is always wonderful, where you will drive along the highest paved road in North America. Wildlife is plentiful in the area, and the Colorado State Animal – the Bighorn Sheep can be seen grazing along the rocky outcroppings right next to the highway. Camping areas and day trip picnic grounds are close by and heading farther west of the Interstate takes you into the Arapaho National Forest and Mt. Evans Wilderness areas. Here you will find climbing, hiking trails, white water rafting, four wheel driving, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, and in winter there is skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, ice skating and more.

Berthoud Pass /Continental Divide – The pass is located west of Denver, and provides a high route between upper Clear Creek Canyon to the upper valley of the Fraser River in Middle Park to the north. The pass traverses the continental divide at the Front Range, on the border between Clear Creek County and Grand County. At 11,370 ft. in altitude, the view from the pass summit is spectacular. Back country snow sports are very popular in this area, but use care in wintertime to avoid possible avalanches.

Mt. Evans Wilderness Area - Of the three “fourteeners” visible from Denver, Mount Evans is the focal point of the western mountain horizon. Much of the Mount Evans Wilderness lies above timberline, and a glacial and rugged terrain is all around. Specific places to see include: Sawtooth, Frozen Lake, and Abyss Lake at 12,550 ft. The highest paved road in America can be found here and hiking, sight seeing and wildlife watching are favorite activities in this high altitude alpine tundra. Even arctic tundra is found here – one of the few locations outside the Arctic Circle where this environment may be found.
