The historic Mollie Kathleen Mine has tours for visitors to see what it was like in one of the richest gold camps of its time. You can go 1,000 feet underground and see the inside of an historic mountain gold mine. The nearby Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mine is still operating today. Visitors also enjoy the Cripple Creek Heritage Center and can learn more about the history of the area.The famed “Mountain Man” era of the 1800′s saw explorers, trappers, and traders come to the Cripple Creek area to capitalize on the abundant wildlife and furs to be had. Beaver pelts were in high demand and over 500 trappers were in this area in the 1830′s trapping and selling at trading posts. When the demand for beaver pelts waned, the buffalo robes which were favored by local Indian tribes became the next industry.

For visitors who want to get outside and who love fresh mountain air and sunshine, there’s local hiking, horseback riding, scenic drives, wildlife, mountain biking for every age and ability and other activities with glorious Pikes Peak as the backdrop. It’s truly a breathtaking experience. If you’re more inclined to stay indoors, the casinos, shops and historic buildings are wonderful for taking in the atmosphere of this area. There are also many museums in the town of Cripple Creek which you’ll love. You’ll see an original narrow gauge railroad, many historic artifacts and will be transported to a different time in history, where the wild west was real and the frontier was still undiscovered.
