Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum captures the history of the Crested Butte areaThis History museum has displays and exhibits involving Crested Butte’s long skiing history. At the Museum you will get to know some of Crested Butte’s characters, and how Crested Butte has changed and how it has stayed the same over time.  Kids and adults both love the growing train diorama depicting the town of Crested Butte in the 1920’s.  The most recent addition to the diorama is the highly-recognizable Old Rock School, which is now the Crested Butte Library. “Our exhibits are always evolving and capturing forgotten pieces of local history, even though the themes remain the same.  Each season when you visit, you’ll see new items in every exhibit.” Located at 331 Elk Ave Crested Butte, Colorado 81224

Ashcroft Ghost Town

Ashcroft Ghost Town dates to 1880 when the silver was mined for a short time and the area boomed - image by mccullagh.orgUnfortunately, Ashcroft went bust almost as soon as it materialized. The mines, which initially produced an amazing 14,000 ounces of silver to the ton, were just shallow deposits. Ashcroft became a ghost town. Only a handful of aging, single men made Ashcroft their home by the turn of the century…. Originally named Castle Forks, then Chloride, this town was founded around 1880 due to the location of placer deposits in the Castle Creek Valley. There was such a boom that three years later there were 2500 residents, two newspapers, a school, two sawmills, and 20 saloons. The town soon dwindled as the mines played out and nearby the nearby Aspen load was located. By 1900, there was only two people left. In 1953, the land was deeded to the Forest Service and is now preserved by the Aspen Historical Society.  Located on Castle Creek Rd  Aspen, Colorado 81611 – Tel: 970-925-3721
