Cory Colorado

Orchard City includes Austin Eckert and CoryCory is a very small community within the boundaries of the incorporated town of Orchard City in Delta County, Colorado. Like Cory, the nearby towns of Austin and Eckert are  individually unincorporated. Cory sits right off Hwy. 65 and has a few notable points of interest. The Cory Cemetery and the US Post Office are close by the main Highway running through the town. A visitor may find it’s difficult to determine exactly where Cory begins and ends, but the entire area is nice, rural, and has a calm, small town neighbor feeling. Agriculture is still a focus for the economy and locally grown fruit is abundant.

The names Austin, Eckert and Cory have existed since the turn of the century.  In the 1900’s, the entire area including Cedaredge to the north was solid with orchards of peaches, apricots, cherries, and apples.  The area was gorgeous. Austin was booming, but Eckert and Cory were just small communities.  Eckert started out as a subdivision and had a school, but had little commercial activity; Cory wasn’t much more than a general store and the Mounds school building, but each little town had a post office. It took many years and hard work on community water projects which would benefit all the residents before they officially combined the towns. In the 1980s the three communities legally united to form “Orchard City“.  Each part continues to have separate post offices, separate zip codes, and separate histories, but all are part of one common entity.

Cory is near the Grand Mesa, one of the world’s largest flat top mountains.  It sits at a majestic elevation of 10,500 ft. The Grand Mesa National Forest holds over 300 lakes and is home to hundreds of species of wildlife. You can enjoy such activities as downhill skiing, cross country skiing, and snowmobiling in the winter, deer and elk hunting in the fall,  and hiking, fishing, and camping in the summer.  There are many trails for riding mountain bikes and ATV’s. The Grand Mesa Scenic Byway organization hosts “Color Sunday” in the fall for all to experience the beauty of the changing Aspens and Oak brush.

Delta County also plays host to a wide variety of festivals throughout the year from Applefest to Cherry Days, from rodeos to the Council Tree Pow Wow. A visit to the area is relaxing, entertaining and beautiful.
