With a population of over 380,000 residents living in 186 square miles, Colorado Springs is the second most populated and the largest city in Colorado. Sitting at the base of one of the most famous American mountains, Pikes Peak, Colorado Springs was selected as the No. 1 Best Big City in “Best Places to Live” by Money Magazine in 2006. Pikes Peak was once home to a ski resort, but it closed due to lack of snow. While conditions at the top are typical of a high alpine environment and snow is a possibility year-round, Pikes Peak doesn’t get the massive snowfall that other mountains do. The summit temperature rarely exceeds 40 degrees and thunderstorms are common, bringing hail and wind gusts occasionally over 100mph, even in the summer. The thin air at the summit has only 60% of the oxygen you would have at sea level. But if you are prepared there are many popular hiking routes and several visitor centers, some with a gift shop and restaurant. There are many ways to ascend the mountain. The Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway is a cog railroad operating from Manitou Springs to the summit year-round. You can also drive to the summit via the Pikes Peak Highway . Here’s an interesting fact, since 1969 the summit has been the site of the United States Army Pikes Peak Research Laboratory . It’s “a medical research lab for the assessment of high altitude on human physiological and medical parameters of military interest.”
