Prior to the settlers coming to homestead and farm the area in the 1800′s, the original inhabitants were the Ute Indian tribes which lived in much of the central and western areas of Colorado. In 1880, the United States removed the tribes from the area and relocated them in northeast Utah, and the Surface Creek Valley was made available to the settlers and families who established orchards, farms, towns and businesses. The town of Cedaredge was not officially incorporated until 1907, and so they celebrated their centennial in 2007. Cedaredge is known as the “Gateway to the Grand Mesa.”
