Buford Colorado
The town of Buford Colorado is a small rural community located along the Flat Tops Scenic Byway. Buford is a quiet little Colorado town that sits along the White river. The whole area surrounding the town is filled with outdoor recreation opportunities and the landscape surrounding Buford is dramatic! Ancient lava flows created the beautiful cliff formations and plateaus that make up the Flat Tops Wilderness area just outside of town.

Once home to the Ute Indian Tribe, the area is now made up of mostly farms and ranches. Having the Flat Tops Wilderness area in their back yard makes Buford a popular destination year round and since the surrounding forest is home to one of Colorado’s largest Elk herds, hunting season brings a lot of traveler’s to the area. If you love the outdoors, Buford Colorado is an excellent choice for your next Colorado outing, no matter what the season!

- Flat Tops Scenic Byway – This 2.5 hour, 82 mile journey between Meeker and Yampa offers diverse landscape scenery. This Colorado byway cuts through the heart of the White River National Forest. Steeped in history, this active byway provides access to the Flat Tops Wilderness area, Trappers Lake and other recreational opportunities within the White River Forest.
- Flat Tops Wilderness Area – This is the second largest wilderness area in Colorado. Dotted with over 110 lakes and ponds, this ancient plateau offers lush forests, subalpine and alpine tundra terrains. There is more than 100 miles of fishable streams and creeks to enjoy here too. Despite the forest fire in 2002 near Trappers Lake, this Colorado wilderness area remains a verdant feature of the landscape surrounding Buford.
- Lake Avery – Also known by many as Big Beaver Reservoir, this Colorado reservoir is located on the Flat Tops Scenic Byway, just outside Buford Colorado. Part of the Oak Ridge State Wildlife Area, this semi-remote, wakeless lake is an excellent destination for fishing, camping, picnics and wildlife viewing.
