Akron Colorado was once the only established town along the line and held great importance among railway men in Colorado. Since 1907, the Central Great Plains Research Station has been providing farmers throughout the country with scientifically proven agricultural information. Today, this small prairie town is also the seat of Washington County.
Akron is the home of some spectacular events during the summer and fall. The National Radial Engine Exhibition invites biplane fans to the show where aviation history comes alive each fall! The NREE planning committee extended an invitation to owners and followers of biplanes, powered by any engine type, to join the 2010 show in September. As the last biplane fly-in in Bartlesville, OK, closed one chapter in the book of aviation events the NREE hopes to continue the story in Akron, CO by inviting the iconic biplanes to join its event at the Colorado Plains Regional Airport.
This event is well attended and has grown every year. World class performers and modern military demonstrations help make the show the best in the region. The show’s signature event each year is a WWII re-enactment with live pyrotechnics and aerial support that is a crowd thriller. The event also hosts a collector car show, local vendors, veteran exhibits kid’s crafts and much, much more.
