The Blue Lake campground is located in the San Isabel National Forest, near La Veta Colorado. Blue lake is about 1/2 mile away and a small creek runs through the campground. The campsites are broken up into two loops. The larger loop is in the open, the smaller one is nestled in the trees. There is a handicap accessible toilet, it’s located in the small loop of Blue Lake campground.
There are many activities to enjoy in the area. Hiking trails are abundant in the area, there’s the North Fork Trail, Indian Trial and others. The Indian Trail is a mixed use that accesses an additional 23 miles of trails for ATV’s, motorcycle, bicycle, foot and horse’s. Fishing in Blue Lake, Bear Lake and their tributaries is also a popular pass time! Want to take a drive, take a trip on the Highway of Legends Scenic Byway between La Veta and Trinidad Colorado. This Colorado scenic byway starts in Walsenburg Colorado and travels along Highway 160 to La Veta Colorado. It then continues along Highway 12, between the Spanish Peaks, past the turn off to Blue Lake Campground, through Cuchara Colorado, over Cucharas Pass and down into the valley ending in Trinidad Colorado. You’ll enjoy beautiful and historic scenery all along this Colorado Scenic Byway.
The climate in this area is perfect for outdoor activities too. In Summer, daytime temperatures can reach the 80’s with nighttime temps in the low 40’s. Spring and Fall here tends to be dry and sunny with 60’s during the day and 30’s at night. Great weather and a lot of things to do make the Blue Lake campground a very popular Colorado camping destination during the Spring, Summer and Fall!
