These high altitude campsites are shaded by Lodgepole pines. Most of the May Queen campsites are pull-throughs. There are also quite a few walk-in tent sites. The road through the campground is paved and the aprons are gravel. This is one of the only campgrounds at Turquoise Lake that does not have flush toilets.

Activities in and around the May Queen National Forest campground include boating and other water sports. There are many trails near the campground to hike on. Mountain bike and horseback riders can also use many of the trails. The water and forest also attract birds and animals of all kinds.  Wildlife viewers will enjoy many opportunities to see a variety of species in their natural habitat. Another great way to spend some time when staying at the May Queen campground is a visit to the historic town of Leadville Colorado.
