Summit Lake Campground is located in Routt National Forest just 15 miles northeast of Steamboat Springs, CO on Buffalo Pass Road. It sits at an elevation of 10,300 ft. on the southern edge of Mt. Zirkel Wilderness Area. There are 15 sites in the high altitude campground, 9 suited to RV and the remainder for tents. Each campsite has a table and fireplace grate, and access to vault toilets. There is seasonal on site water provided, and a day use area also available. A high clearance vehicle is recommended for this access road. The usual season for this campground is July through mid-September, depending on the weather.

Activities in the area include fishing in Summit Lake; the campground is at the west end of the Lake among Engelmann spruce trees. Canoes and non-motorized boats are permitted on Summit Lake. Hiking is popular in the area, and a trailhead into the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness is to the north. (No bikes are allowed in this wilderness) To the south is the trailhead for the Wyoming Trail and biking or motorized travel is permitted. The Buffalo Pass Trailhead is linked to the Wyoming Trail which follows the Continental Divide from Rabbit Ears Pass into Wyoming. If you enjoy whitewater, look for Rock Creek and Elk River.
