Mizpah Campground is located in the Arapaho National Forest off Highway 40 just outside of Empire, Colorado. It’s at the base of Berthoud Pass and so has both the beauty and altitude of the Rocky Mountain region. The campground has 10 sites, all of which are wooded and suitable for RV’s or tents. The roads are dirt, there is one water hydrant and only one restroom which is not handicapped accessible. The usual season for this campground is Memorial Day through Labor Day depending on the weather.
Hiking areas to explore include Berthoud Pass, Argentine Trail, Grays Peak Trail, Mount Nystrom Trail, Sevenmile Ski Trail as well as Vasquez Peak Wilderness area, and over the Pass is Mary Jane Ski Trail. If you enjoy water, there is Hoop Creek, Woods Creek and Clear Creek – the West Fork which runs along the camp is fun for kayaking, and trout fishing too. Scenic Drives over Berthoud Pass will take you to the Continental Divide, and on down into Winter Park, Fraser and beyond. You get a spectacular view of Grand County from the Visitors Center at the top of the Pass. There is wildlife in the area to enjoy viewing. You may encounter Colorado’s State animal, the Big Horn Sheep among other creatures. Please remember this is bear country, so be cautious with food storage.
