Idlewild Campground is in the Arapaho National Forest in Grand County just one mile south of Winter Park on Highway 40. It’s a shaded and cool location very convenient to the mountain towns surrounding it. There are 26 campsites and water, restrooms and picnic tables are provided. The trees have been culled due to Pine Beetle issues, so that opens up the sites a bit more. The Fraser River is on the east side of the campground and the Fraser River Trail is accessible by pedestrian and mountain bike, but no motorized vehicles. The season is usually Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Activities in the area include fishing, hiking, mountain biking, shopping, restaurants, chairlift rides, Winter Park Village, rafting tours, horseback riding, golfing, whitewater paddling, swimming, Blue Star Picnic Ground, Winter Park Resort, Rollins Pass,Wolverine Creek, South Boulder Creek Trail, and the Fraser Valley Trail. If you are looking for a campground close to many fun activities for the family, this is a great choice. Lutz Reservoir is close by, and Rocky Mountain National Park is great for a day trip. Hike on the Seven mile Ski Trail, Mary Jane Ski Trail, or the High Lonesome Trail. Remember to dress for higher altitude, because the evening and night may be quite cool. A beautiful area to visit is Berthoud Pass and the Continental Divide, just a few miles away.
