There are actually two Denver Creek Campgrounds. The lower Denver Creek Campground is situated on the lower side of Highway 125, alongside Willow Creek. The Upper Denver Creek campground in on the opposite side of the highway on the mountainside. Currently, the lower campground is the only one of the two that is open. Like many areas in Colorado, the surrounding forest has suffered from the Pine Beetle infestation. The upper campground has been closed while the Forest Service removes the trees that have died because of the beetles attack. The lower campground is open and despite having less tree cover, it’s a beautiful place to camp. It’s location along Willow creek provides nice fishing opportunities for the whole family. These campgrounds open in late July and stay open through Labor day. They may remain open past Labor day, weather permitting.
In addition to fishing Willow creek, there are many other activities to enjoy. Forest roads in the area are mapped and ready for OHV’ing, 4-wheeling and snowmobiling in the winter. There are also lots of hiking trails for all to enjoy. Forest road and trail maps are available at the Sulphur Ranger District offices in Granby, see our Arapaho National Forest article to get their address and contact information. Looking to see some wildlife? Deer, elk, hawks, moose and other Colorado native species can be seen here. Continuing north on Highway 125 you can enjoy a scenic drive over Willow Creek Pass. Travel back down into Granby and then back up Colorado State Highway 34 to open up another large selection of things to see and do! Willow Creek Reservoir, Granby Lake, Shadow Mountain Reservoir, Grand Lake and the west entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park are all within a reasonable drive. Follow Highway 40 through Granby and continue east, before you know it you’ll be in the town of Winter Park Colorado, home to the Winter Park Ski Resort. Once you recognize the recreational possibilities in this area, you’ll want to return to see and do more!
