Sleeping Elephant Campground is located in the Roosevelt National Forest in the upper half of Cache La Poudre Canyon on CO 14, on the north side of the road. It sits in an aspen stand along with juniper and sage, however all camping sites are in the open. There are 15 sites in the campground, of which 12 are suited to RV and the remaining 3 more suited to tents. The road through the campground is gravel, there is one water hydrant and two restrooms – one of which is handicapped accessible. The season for this campground is usually mid-May through September depending on weather.
Activities in the area include trout fishing in the Cache La Poudre River and Roaring Creek. Hiking on the Roaring Creek Trail is about 3 miles east on Hwy. 14. Wildlife viewing is abundant in the area. In nearby Bliss State Wildlife Area you will find Colorado’s State animal the Bighorn Sheep. Also be extremely cautious with food storage in this campground, remember you are in bear country!
