19th Annual Chocolate Classic
On February 10, 2011, in perfect time for Valentine’s Day, Aspen’s historic Hotel Jerome will show its love for the victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault by hosting RESPONSE’s 19th Annual Chocolate Classic – a festive family event.
RESPONSE is dedicated to ending interpersonal violence by providing support, education and direct services – such as confidential shelter – to victims. Many victims find few targeted supportive measures among existing public and community agencies, and RESPONSE has essentially guided them safely at various stages of their trials. “Nineteen years ago, we began the Classic as a celebratory way for all participants to help those who’ve had little to celebrate and don’t know where else to turn,” said Lauren Mbereko, Executive Director of RESPONSE. “From fine chocolatiers and confectioners to members of the public, everyone shows a lot of love for victims of domestic abuse through their contributions to the Classic.”
The fundraising centerpiece of the event – or its creamy filling – is the veritable Chocolate Competition, in which participants vote for their favorites to win, and the silent auction that will offer romantic dinners and enticing items that any sweetheart would adore on Valentine’s Day. Prominent local restaurants and hotels are well represented at the event, which draws over 600 attendees annually. Chocolate lovers from all over the Roaring Fork Valley come to Aspen in February to partake in this event. Judges evaluate entrants on the best tasting cake, the most creative concoction, and a host of other categories.
