Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra Goes to School

The Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra is enjoying a year long celebration of music and education for children aged 4th and 5th grade to help them appreciate the classical music genre. Called the “Discovery Concert”, Michael Butterman, the BPO musical director, is helping build a year long curriculum for students to learn all about classical music, conducting, instruments and teamwork. With so many music programs being cut in the public school systems, this is a wonderful gift for the students who want to enjoy learning about music.

How do composers tell a story without any words?  Butterman explains that in the “Philharmonic Discovery Concert: Stories and Legends” by introducing the kids to characters via the musical instrument used to represent each one. The three elements of a story: Character, Setting and Plot all combine with melody, rhythm and carefully selected instruments to tell a tale using music much in the same way a playwright would use words.

According to his website, “Michael Butterman is making his mark as a model for today’s conductors with his commitment to creative artistry, innovative programming, and true engagement of audiences and communities in which he works. He is in his fourth season as Music Director for the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra and also for the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, and is in his 10th season as Principal Conductor for Education and Outreach for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the only position of its kind in the United States.” The Boulder Philharmonic is located in the Dairy Center for the Arts in Boulder, CO.  and concerts are performed at Macky Auditorium on the CU-Boulder Campus. Tickets may be purchased online or at the box office on the day of the performance.
