The New Year rides into Denver with 23 PRCA Rodeo Performances
As one of the first PRCA rodeos of the new year, professional rodeo cowboys understand the importance of getting a check at the National Western Stock Show. January 9-24 will be no exception as 23 PRCA rodeo performances take over the Mile High City and provide about $546,000 in total prize money.
Just ask the 2009 National Western Tie-Down Roping Champion and Coloradoan, Josh Peek, who earned $13,158 at last year’s event. Ending the rodeo year just $2,000 ahead of 16th place in the 2009 world standings, Peek’s Denver win likely resulted in his fourth consecutive Wrangler National Finals Rodeo tie-down roping qualification. You can bet he will be back this year along with other defending champions like Tim Shirley and Dustin Reeves (BB), Jake Rinehart and Curtis Cassidy (SW), Bradley Harter (SB), Chad Masters and Michael Jones (TR), Nancy Hunter (GB), and Kanin Asay (BR).
The National Western consistently attracts top-50 talent and has a reputation for great livestock, which is often a paycheck make-or-break. Beutler Bros. & Cervi Rodeo Company and over a dozen other stock contractors haul the best-of-the-best to Denver. Names like Calgary Stampede’s Grated Coconut and the arena record holding 93-point bull, Lucky Strike, will again headline this year’s rodeo.
Over 600,000 people attended the 16-day event last year and were entertained by specialty acts like Radical Ryan Rodriguez, the One-Arm Bandit John Payne, Tim Lepard and Team Ghost Riders, Charro Jerry Diaz, the Westernaires drill team, and freestyle bullfighting. These entertainers will be joined this year by Equine Extremist Tommy Turvey. Lance Brittan, Wacey Munsell, and Quirt Hunt will once again be the National Western’s bullfighters and serve as cowboy protection.
The National Western features cowboy-friendly back-to-back performances and a qualifier will be held January 5-6 for the timed PRCA events.
